I designed and fabricated this necklace, ‘Scales of Silver & Gold’ in sterling silver and 23.5K gold to draw attention to the beauty and fragility of the Pangolin. This little known species is the world's only scaly mammal. They curl up into a tiny ball using their scales as protection for themselves and their babies. Their scales are made of keratin, and are highly sought after in illegal markets, making these poor animals seriously endangered; we don’t even know how many still exist in the wild.
This piece was a painstaking undertaking, and is very important to me; as the world's only scaly mammal, these poor animals are killed solely for their scales, sometimes selling as high as their weight in gold. I was inspired by their plight and beauty to craft this piece and hopefully bring awareness to my community and the world. I hope this will at least spark some viewers to learn more about pangolins, we all need to do a little more to protect the animals we have left on this planet. This hand fabricated sterling silver veil is intended for a nuptial ceremony; with 10 scales that move independently but never leave each others side, just like the lovers they adorn. My inspiration for this piece came from the dangerously endangered animal the pangolin. I was inspired by their plight and beauty to craft this piece and hopefully bring awareness to my community. This species is the world's only scaly mammal; they curl into a ball to use their scales as protection. The scales on the veil are representative of protecting oneself from the outer world. There are 10 scales on the veil representing the decades of commitment you are embarking on together. Every scale represents a year together and they gradually get larger to show the growth and strengthening of your bond. During the nuptials ceremony the veil is flipped to the back of the head, a metaphor for letting your partner into your protected world, and removing any barriers between you. This collection was inspired by the Pangolin, and actually helps save Pangolins from the meat and scale trade by donating a portion of all sales from this line to the World Wildlife Fund's Adopt a Pangolin program. I urge you to check out this line, but also to do some research on pangolins and how you can help.
